Ofcom has announced a delay to the 0870 and 0871 changes to at least spring 2008. This follows the meeting of the NTS Focus Group (the industry body for non-geographic numbers in the UK), on the 25th October. Ofcom has highlighted concerns around pre call announcements on the 0870 range, and the lack of regulatory clarity on 0871 as the reasons for the delay in implementation.
You can read the Ofcom Delay Notice, or visit the Ofcom website for more background information.
The changes were due to come into effect on 1st February 2008, and included both charging to receive calls on your 0870 numbers, and the change of 0871 regulation.
Justin Collins, Head of Marketing at Alternative Networks commented, “The delay to these changes give companies that extra bit of breathing space they needed before the changes come into effect. This is a great opportunity to make sure that they have an effective strategy in place, and are successfully deploying a new number range.” Alternative Networks is offering free consultancy, a dedicated freephone helpline 0800 316 1122 and online resource giving all the information and background on the changes at NGN number changes.
