BlackBerry – there’s more than one way to get mobile
29 Sep 2008
Research in Motion, the company behind BlackBerry smartphones, is constantly evolving, with new handsets and applications being launched at regular intervals to suit all types of business communication requirements. And while it’s easy to become excited about new handsets, it’s certainly worth looking at the more mundane aspects of your mobile email solution – the server itself.
There are now three ways to have email pushed to your device. They’ve been developed to make sure that everyone gets the service they need, at the right price. We’ve been looking at the differences – including the recently launched BlackBerry Professional Software – to give you the run down on what’s right for you.
For fewer than 30 BlackBerry connections, choose . . .
BlackBerry Professional Software (BPS)
As no separate server is required, the hugely flexible and cost efficient BPS can easily be installed on an existing system – keeping set-up costs low. It’s perfect for companies with up to 30 BlackBerry users, and offers:
- Simple administration – single user profile and single administration rights
- Full remote PIM – over the air synchronisation of email, calendar, tasks and contacts
- Secure system – using end-to-end AES or triple-DES encryption
For a large BlackBerry fleet, choose…
BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES)
BES can provide email for up to 2,000 users per server, plus it contains a development suite which allows office applications to be used on BlackBerry enabled devices.
- Highly secure system – using end-to-end AES or triple-DES encryption
- User profiles – allows specific groups or individuals different functionality – e.g. directors can access company systems; managers only voice and email
- Full remote PIM – providing over the air synchronisation of email, calendar, tasks and contacts including company contacts (Global Address, Look up, etc.)
- Different admin levels – only specific people can modify what is on the server
For accesses web-based email on a individual basis, choose . . .
BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS)
With no software requirements, BIS simply allows the installation of POP3 or IMAP settings on a compatible device. Once this is set up, email is forwarded to your device.
- Ideal for individual user or companies without mail servers
- Low risk – no server or software costs and a lower monthly line rental
