Linking mobiles with desk phones

There are a number of options to consider when linking fixed and mobile phones together. We have highlighted two methods that are available now.

Mobile twinning

Perhaps the most cost effective method of getting set up when linking mobile and desk phones. The Mitel 3300 will route a call to both a mobile and desk phone. It is then up to the user to decide which handset to answer the call on, meaning that the call will reach them wherever they are.

This method can be deployed on any mobile handset reducing the set up costs. However, the mobile handset will not have all functionality that a desk phone will have.

Single voice mail box

If your mobile handset can receive email and play .WAV files, a copy of a PBX voicemail can be emailed to the mobile handset, meaning that your users can control their voicemail by having a single mail box.

Mobile integration extension

The Nokia E-series mobile handsets and the Avaya Communication Manager allow mobile handsets to become SIP extensions.

The Avaya and Nokia have developed the One-X SIP client that sits on a Nokia E-series handsets. The client allows the handset to have the same or similar full functionality of the desk handset. Different functions can be programmed to suit requirements.

The E-series handsets are WiFi enabled which means that they can use a companys WiFi network when on site, reducing mobile call costs, and then use the mobile GSM/3G network when off site.

This method of linking your mobile to your desk phone gives more functionality than mobile twinning. For example you can transfer the call between your mobile and desk phone or enable you to record calls from your mobile handset. The UI (user Interface) also means that there is no need to remember short codes to access features.

Single voice mail

The Avaya Communications Manager will detect when your mobile is going to go to voicemail and will drop the call into the PBX voice mail. This can allow your users to have a single voice mail for their business calls and use their mobile voice mail for personal messages.

Benefits

The benefits of linking your desk phones with your mobile handsets are many. However we believe the key areas are:

  • Improved contactability - Easy for people to contact you via a single number
  • Simplicity - All communications on one device, through one number
  • Increased efficiency - Get through on the first call. Reduce time spent contacting colleagues
  • Increased responsiveness - Allow others to easily call or leave a message. Where you can retrieve it easily
  • More professional - Clients and suppliers can contact you seamlessly on one number
  • Reduced costs - Less calls required to leave or retrieve messages
